The most remarkable book you will ever read.  Against standing orders of
the A.E.F. that no diaries or journals be kept by soldiers, Private William
Graham decided to write down his experiences anyway and we are certainly
glad he did.   For what he left for us is not only extremely valuable as a
historical resource, but is also a well written story of an American Doughboy
"Doing his Bit"  for his country  "Somewhere in France" during one of the
world's greatest conflicts.

World War I was originally called “The War to end all Wars”.  Why?….because
the people of the world believed that due to the horrendous amount of
death and destruction caused by this conflict, the world’s nations would
never allow circumstances to reach the point of such warfare again!
Worldwide, over sixteen and a half million voices were stilled forever and
whole towns and villages were totally destroyed.

Technology had advanced to the point where there were no longer troops
dressed in pretty toy-soldier uniforms, marching shoulder to shoulder onto
the field of battle with flags flying and drums and pipes playing.   The glory
days were long over.  Mobilized soldiers could now be shifted into positions
at a much faster pace than on horseback or on foot.   Now war was a time of
terror with a magnitude of terrible casualties caused by machine guns, flame
throwers, airplanes, long range artillery, automatic and semi-automatic
rifles, hand grenades, mines, barbed wire, tanks and of course the dreaded
mustard gas which would cause the skin to blister and when inhaled would
cause a man to literally cough up the linings of his lungs and suffer a
horrible death.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! - An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime...
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

(From the Poem "Dulce Et Decorum Est" written by Wilfred Owen in 1917)

Not only is this book a treasure trove for history lovers,
it is a superbly written human interest story that
practically reads like a novel.  A wonderful addition to
anybody's library.
