What secret does the future hold for mankind?
Jamie Abbott lingered in the history department’s special archival room. While she pretended to leaf through a book
she kept her focus on the door and beyond. She wasn’t really surprised to see Lacey outside the professor’s office but
the envelope she held did. Lacey and Jamie had been roommates since their freshman year and the two had become
close. Lacey wasn’t at the dorm when the package arrived but Jamie sure was. She’d been intrigued by its arrival. There
was no postage and to her knowledge, nobody even knocked on the door to deliver it. She was busy at work at her desk
and when she’d decided to take a quick break, she was very surprised to turn around and see the mystery package lying
on her roommate’s bed. She had neither seen nor heard anyone and she was in her room all night. To deepen the
mystery, when Lacey returned and read its contents she became confused and upset. Jamie tried to get her roommate to
open up but it wasn’t possible. Lacey clammed up tighter than a shell which left Jamie no other alternative than to follow
the girl’s movements.
Lacey followed her normal pattern all day long and Jamie suspected that her best course of action was to visit the
renown head of the History Department who was also Lacey’s uncle. She thought that Lacey would pay her uncle a visit
once her commitments of the day were fulfilled. Jamie tried to look composed when she saw Lacey and she almost
faltered when she saw the package. She didn’t say a word and just walked away which she supposed would confuse her
friend since they were close. She decided that Lacey would think she’d had a bad meeting and would seek to comfort her
in their dorm room later. She acted like she was leaving and when she saw Lacey open the door and walk into her uncle’s
office; she quickly backtracked and walked into the archival room which was directly across the hall. Once inside and in
clear view of the door, she took out her cell phone and dialed a number. She spoke briefly and hung up. She picked up a
book and briefed through it while she waited.
She didn’t have to wait for very long. Almost an hour later she saw Professor Leon Todd emerge from his office,
alone. She saw he had a booklet of sorts and that he’d put it in an envelope that had been on his secretary’s desk. She
then saw him place the envelope he personally addressed, into the outgoing mail box. Jamie smiled. She watched quietly
as the man walked back into his office. She was careful to stay quiet since she suspected the two would walk out any
minute now. She had to blend in with the woodwork until she was sure they were gone. Five minutes later, she frowned
at the door. Neither the professor nor Lacey had reemerged. Jamie stood up and walked over to the desk and picked up
the envelope. She put the envelope into her backpack and then walked over to the door and knocked. No answer. She
tried the doorknob but it was locked. It was quiet inside so she walked away. As she walked, she took out her cell phone
once again and waited for an answer. When she heard a voice on the other end she said, “I have the package. I know
what to do with it.” She listened for a few seconds and then hung up and continued to move toward the exit. This was
going to be a very long and dangerous night.
